The antennae galaxies are a pair of merging, interacting galaxies, around 50 million light years away from us. The names of the individual galaxies is NGC 4038 and NGC 4039. Their merging is causing a large number of new stars to be created, giving the merging galaxies a particularly strong emission of blue light.
