When a star explodes in a supernova their brightness increases dramatically and then steadily declines over a period of several months. By imaging these targets over time we can watch as the gradually fade in brightness. Astronomer perform photometry to measure this brightness and plot the decline onto a light curve. If you would like to give it a go contact one of the FT team!
