FT relaunches Asteroid and Near Earth Object Project
The Faulkes Telescope Project will officially re-launch its asteroid and Near Earth Object (NEO) project on 1st March 2006.
The project will be led by Sarah Roberts, Daniel Duggan and David Bowdley of the Faulkes Telescope Project and Jay Tate of the Spaceguard Centre. The aim of the project is to enable schools and students to take part in a nationwide effort to do important follow-up observations of asteroids and NEOs.
Schools wishing to participate will be provided with online training and support, and will be guided through the process of observing asteroids and doing the associated astrometry (positional measurements). Through the Faulkes Student Academy, the FT Project has already started working directly with students who have been trained how to do imaging and astrometry of asteroids.
To take part in the new asteroid and NEO project you will need to register your interest. To do this you will need to email email@example.com with the following details:
- Your Name
- Your School Name
- Your Faulkes Telescope Username
- Your Email Address
- How many students are likely to be involved
- The age range of the students
You will receive confirmation of your registration from Sarah and will hear from us all shortly after the 1st March 2006.
To be automatically eligible to join, you will need to be a school, college or other educational establishment in the UK. Amateur astronomical societies should contact Sarah for further details of how they can be involved.
