Galilean Nights at Cardiff Bay

The FT project took part in the recent IYA09 event, "Galilean Nights", held on a windy Saturday night in Cardiff Bay. Paul Roche (ably accompanied by daughter Cerys!) worked with the team from the Techniquest Science Discovery Centre, hosting a live video conference astronomy workshop with a science centre in Atlanta, USA, in the afternoon, and demonstrating the Herschel Outreach Project thermal infra-red imaging camera in the evening.

Over 500 people visited the Galilean Nights stand in Cardiff Bay in the evening, and the IR camera proved to be a huge hit. Paul and Cerys were able to demonstrate a variety of applications for thermal imaging cameras, such as showing how much heat lads in thin t-shirts were losing compared to the more sensible/sober members of the public who were suitably wrapped up on this cold night! The visitor numbers were boosted by the presence of the Rally GB in the nearby Oval Basin, and the Techniquest team were very pleased with the overall event.
