Images of Jupiter Impact
As some of you may know, it has recently been reported that Jupiter appears to have been hit by an object up to 2 km in diameter. It was first noticed by the Australian amateur, Anthony Wesley on 19th July. He reported his observations of a 'black scar' around the size of the Earth near Jupiter's southern pole to NASA. It's not yet known what the object was, although its thought most likely a comet.
As you may imagine, many of the world's biggest telescopes including the HST have taken images, and the Faulkes Telescope Project has been collaborating with a group led by Professor Alan Fitzsimmons at Queens University, Belfast.
For your interest, we attach some preliminary colour composite images taken by FT North - we're intending to image Jupiter in coming months to see how this impact area evolves.
In the attached images, the impact area is the black 'smudge' towards the bottom of Jupiter.
