Astronomy Project wins Silver in Europe
The European Hands-on Universe (EU-HOU) project was honoured with the silver award by the European Commission in May this year, at their conference on "Innovation and Creativity in the Lifelong Learning Programme: Create, Innovate and Cooperate."
The aim was to award outstanding European projects which will serve as motivating examples of the best innovative practices to accomplish the goals set by European leaders in Lisbon to become "the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in the world" by 2010 in the field of Education and Training.
The EU-HOU project aims to reawaken student's interest in science through the use of Astronomy, and has expanded from 8 countries at the start of the project, to over 14 in Europe. The Faulkes Telescope Project is the UK partner in this successful venture, with the UK representatives being Dr Paul Roche and Dr Sarah Roberts.
The Faulkes Team have been involved in a number of the popular EU-HOU teacher training workshops, where teachers are shown a number of resources which they can take back into the classroom. Recently they have just returned from participating in a training workshop held at the Observatoire de Haute Provence, France. More information on this workshop can be found here, with links to the UK teacher's reports on the event.
The next EU-HOU teacher training workshop will be hosted by the Faulkes Telescope Project at Cardiff University, Wales, in August. Interested teachers are encouraged to apply for a place in this workshop by emailing Dr Sarah Roberts at sarah.roberts AT faulkes-telescope.com. All expenses for the workshops will be covered by EU-HOU funds.
