Snow and Ice at FTN
Many schools have been asking why FTN is not operational because of some ice on the enclosure. To illustrate the extent of the problem, this photo was taken from one of the neighbouring buildings to FTN.
Because of the clam-shell design of FTN, any ice is potentially a problem as it could jam whilst the enclosure is open. This can damage the enclosure hydraulics and possibly result in the enclosure being stuck open and exposed to the elements.
Here is some of the Haleakala flora, braving the snow!
Thanks to Mark Elphick (FTN telescope manager) for battling the snow to bring us these pictures.
