The Geminids are Coming
Tomorrow night (Friday, 14th December) sees one of the more spectacular meteor showers reach its peak. The Geminids meteor shower takes place from December 7 to 17, but the rates are generally low except for the few days around the maximum.
This year, the peak this year is due in the early evening of December 14, around 18.00 UT. This years viewing is helped by a waxing Moon, which sets at around 20.30 UT in Western Europe.
As the Geminids are one of the stronger meteor showers (perhaps as many as 120 per hour), it may be possible to see meteors as soon as it gets dark, although waiting a few hours til the constellation of Gemini has risen, will help.
The Geminid meteor shower is so named as the radiant point (where all the meteors appear to come from) is in the constellation of Gemini.
